Cherise Atkinson

Cherise Atkinson is an artist working with color and texture to express inner and unseen landscapes. While navigating the transitions between her career as hairstylist and her studio practice as an artist, Cherise began to attune to the dynamic interplay between the interpersonal and the intrapersonal. In her practice, Cherise gives attention to these energies that influence human emotion, perception and behavior.

Cherise expresses through accumulation. Glazes, smears, marks and piles of both oil and acrylic paint saturate richly textured tactile surfaces in her work. Layers of various grounds, mediums, paper and fabric create a foundation that is intended to disrupt and fragment each passing color.
